Chile announces measures to avoid power rationing

Chile announced measures on Thursday meant to help cut down on electricity consumption, and avoid rationing scenarios similar to those it experienced in 1998 and 1999. The measures, announced by Marcelo Tokman, Chile's energy minister, include a reduction in voltage of up to 10 percent, extension of summer daylight savings time, as well conservation incentives for consumers. "With these measures, given the current outlook, there should not be rationing, but there is always the possibility that some new factor could put us in that situation," Tokman said.
