Magnitude-5.0 offshore earthquake occurs near coast of Coquimbo Region Aug. 31

 

A magnitude-5.2 offshore earthquake occurred near the coast of Chile's Coquimbo Region at around 09:04 Aug. 31. The epicenter was about 49 km (31 miles) west-northwest of the city of Coquimbo. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 25 km (16 miles), and weak-to-light shaking was probably felt in coastal parts of central Chile. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake, and significant damage is unlikely. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Aftershocks are likely over the coming days. The event has not prompted any tsunami advisories.
