A magnitude-5.1 earthquake occurred in the southeastern Atlantic Ocean off the west coast of Maule Region at around 05:18 May 13. The epicenter was about 80 km (50 miles) west of Constitucion. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 10 km (6 miles), and light shaking was probably felt throughout parts of Maule, Nuble, central and western O'Hoggins, northern and western Biobio, far southwestern Metropolitan, and far southwestern Valparaiso regions.
