There are indications of the presence of the third generation gang “El Tren de Aragua” (Aragua Train) in Chile since at least January 2022. Their presence has coincided with a rise in kidnappings, homicides with unknown perpetrators and an explosive increase in irregular migration in the north of the country, mainly of Venezuelan origin. Measures adopted to combat these different aspects have included the deployment of military personnel on the northern border from the beginning of 2023, within the framework of Chile’s law critical infrastructure protection.
