The Chilean steel sector risks disappearing due to a "lack of public policies" capable of challenging foreign competition. This is what the Association of Metallurgical and Engineering Industries (Asimet) writes in a note issued during the meeting with the Minister of Economy, Nicolas Grau. A meeting that follows the announcement made in recent days by Siderurgica Huachipato, a company that has decided - three months from now - to suspend operations "indefinitely" after the import duty on Chinese steel was set at a much lower rate than required. “Companies in the sector see a clear risk of disappearance of the metallurgical and engineering industry,” said the president of Asimet, Fernando Garcia, quoted by local media. On the other hand, companies report a lack of fiscal policies useful for allowing the changes necessary for the energy and technological transition, in favor of production that is more respectful of environmental commitments.
