Almost five centuries after its establishment, Plaza de Armas (Arms' Square) today continues to be an important administrative, cultural and social area in Santiago de Chile, a site where musicians and painters gather, and a must for national and foreign visitors. Located in the heart of the Chilean capital, the square was set up in 1541 by Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia as a military training field and strategic center to expand what had been taken over.
