A magnitude-5.3 earthquake occurred in Chile's Antofagasta Region at around 14:20 July 3. The epicenter was about 39 km (24 miles) west of San Pedro de Atacama. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 94 km (58 miles), and light shaking was probably felt in areas near the epicenter. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake; significant damage is unlikely. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Aftershocks are likely over the coming days.
