Chilean awaiting refugee-status decision finds peace in cooking

 

Despite limited use of his right hand that was mangled in a vicious assault, Claudio Pena kneaded dough in the wee hours one morning for his specialty Chilean meat pie empanadas. Ground beef juice spilled out of the browned pies and the sweet smell of butter filled the air when the pies were served at a park in Tokyo’s Nerima Ward on June 4, 2022. Seeing people stuff their mouths with his empanadas brought a smile to Pena’s face. It was one of the rare moments in recent years that the Chilean national has been truly happy.
