A magnitude-5.0 earthquake occurred in Metropolitan Region, Chile, at around 05:51 Nov. 8. The epicenter was about 5 km (3 miles) north-northwest of Buin. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 90 km (56 miles), and light shaking was probably felt throughout much of Metropolitan Region, as well as parts of Valparaiso, O'Higgins, southern Coquimbo, and northern Maule regions in Chile and western Mendoza and southwestern San Juan provinces in Argentina. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake; however, significant damage is unlikely]. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Light aftershocks are likely over the coming days.
