The U.S. Commerce Department Wednesday found Chile guilty of unfair salmon trade in a preliminary ruling, but imposed only a minimal penalty against it. The ruling said Chile is unfairly subsidizing its salmon industry, making its exports to the United States unfairly competitive with U.S. fisheries. Commerce said punitive duties of 0.62 percent, the minimum allowed by law, should be imposed on Chilean salmon imports to offset the alleged subsidies.
